Life At Moorview Institute – Chapter 13

Please, Turn Out The Lights

Mel and Amos parked the van near the institute’s incinerator and took a little used door into the medical administration building. The offices were closed and just a few security lights were left on to illuminate the night watchman’s nightly journey.

Each dressed in full black, and carried a small bag in their hand. Instead of using the elevator, they climbed the three flights of stairs to the administration offices and to one office in particular. The dark wood and frosted glass panels were marked with each doctor’s name. When they came to the one marked ‘Dr. Ward,’ they opened the door and quietly moved to the locked file cabinet near the corner.
Mel removed a set of skeleton keys on a ring from his bag and tried the smallest brass key first. It wasn’t until his fifth attempt that the lock released and the drawer slid open.

“It’s gotta be in one of these envelopes,” Mel’s thick fingers flicked the row of envelopes until one marked ‘Springfield M & P’ came into view. “That’s gotta be it!”

He placed the envelope into his bag and carefully re-locked the cabinet. Amos rifled through the desk and scooped up a small pile of cash, he too deposited it into his bag. “C’mon, let’s get out of here before the cops decide to search shit head’s office.”

As they quietly moved out the office door, they were surprised by a sudden bright beam of light shining directly into their eyes. They froze!

“Hold it right there you two!”

The raspy voice of Dr. Ward was instantly recognized by Mel and Amos. Mel’s hand was in his right pocket. His left held the bag tightly. Amos’ breathing became shallow and the fear caused the man to break out in a cold sweat. The mission to clean up any evidence leading back to Springfield Provisions was now a failure.

Ward’s footsteps moved nearer, and in the bright light, Mel couldn’t see if the doctor was holding a large silvery gun.

“So, you think you can come over here and steal my things? What’s in the bag Amos? Money? Who sent you Mel, that asshole you work for?”

Mel’s fingers tightened around a small revolver I his coat pocket. With his thumb, he cocked the gun and pointed directly at Ward’s chest. His heart fluttered at the thought of what he had to do next in order to get away and please their boss and cover their very exposed ass.

“No Doctor, we wuz here looking fer you. Boss sez he’s got something fer ya and sends us two to deliver it to ya.”

In the gloomy darkness, a smile briefly crossed Ward‘s face. He knew the two were grasping to cover up their real intentions, and if he killed them both now, no one would know. He might take them back to the hospital and do a little butchering work himself on both of them, he thought with a wicked smile. His fingers began to tighten around the pistol and he adjusted the beam of light from the flashlight as he readied himself.

The muffled shot and wet thud that went deep into his chest surprised Ward. His vision dimmed and he felt his legs involuntarily buckle. A second one a second later put out the light.

From out in the woods an owl hooted and another answered from deep within the woods. Darkness closed in around Moorview and from in the distance a low rumble of thunder could be heard.
