A 19-year-old Baltimore man is dead after police say he accidentally shot himself while taking ‘selfies’ while holding a loaded magnum revolver.

De’Jang Alonso Smith died of a gunshot wound to the throat about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at an apartment in southwest Baltimore. The force of the .44 magnum round decapitated Smith and the head was found wedged between the bed and the wall by police investigators. Sgt. Gil Morrey said he still had ‘a look of complete surprise on his face’ when they retrieved the head. The head was placed with the body for transportation to the morgue for an autopsy.

Investigators say Smith had found a .44 caliber gun and was taking pictures of himself and a cousin while holding the weapon and posting them to social media websites when the gun discharged, killing Smith instantly.

Investigators say the cousin, Twanda Jones, age 21, was in the kitchen making sausages and eggs when the gun fired. Jones said she knew something was wrong when she heard the shot and a loud thump immediately afterward.

Baltimore police are continuing the investigation.
