A group of Democratic lawmakers paid a surprise un-authorized visit to a immigrant detention facility in New Jersey on Father’s Day to speak with asylum-seekers who have been separated from their families under a new Trump administration policy.

The group, led by Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), the senior Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, attempted to enter the Elizabeth Contract Detention Facility in Elizabeth, New Jersey, for over an hour Sunday morning. Staffers unfamiliar with the self-pro claimed ‘lawmaker’ shut the door fearing it was a child molester or worse due mainly to the scruffy appearance of Nadler who hadn’t shaved for several days. Several workers called police.

Several members of the delegation ― which included Reps. Frank Pallone Jr. (D-N.J.), Albio Sires (D-N.J.), Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.), Maxine Waters(D-CA.), Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) and Adriano Espaillat (D-N.Y.) ―were ultimately allowed inside. They immediately asked for food service products that were planned to be served for lunch in order to examine the taco sauce to see for themselves if they were serving legitimate Mexican taco sauce or stuff made in New York City.

The group posed for photo ops, shook hands with bewildered children from Guatemala who believed the adults were there just to beat them. Finally, after finding the child care center to be better than what almost 13 million US kids have to call home every day, the group prepared to leave with the exception of Waters, Jefferies, and Espaillat who asked for a room and inquired about if the cost was free to anyone.

Republican law makers explained the highly politicized visit as a partisan attempt to deflect the newly released IG report on illegal Democrat influences on the last election.
