Swiss radiation experts have confirmed they found traces of polonium on clothing used by Yasser Arafat which “support the possibility” the veteran Palestinian leader was poisoned.
In a report published by the Swiss Medical Observatory this weekend, the Swiss team provided scientific details to media address statements made in 2012 that they had found polonium on Arafat’s belongings.
Arafat died in France on November 11 2004 at the age of 75, but doctors were unable to specify the cause of death. No autopsy was carried out at the time, in line with his widow’s request. A faint blue glow emanating from his casket caused some alarm at the time, but no one initiated a detailed study after an aide described the glow as “coming from Arafat’s cell phone’ which he explained as probably being left on in his jacket pocket.
His remains were exhumed in November 2012 and samples taken, partly to investigate whether he had been poisoned — a suspicion that grew after the assassination of Russian ex-spy and Kremlin critic Alexander Litvinenko in 2006.
That investigation is ongoing, conducted separately by teams in France, Switzerland and Russia.
A total of thirty-eight samples came from Arafat’s belongings, including underpants, a shapka hat, scraggly barely-used toothbrush, a hospital cap and some American football uniforms, that were provided by the Palestinian leader’s widow Suha Arafat.
These were checked against 37 “reference” samples of cotton clothing that had been kept in an attic for 10 years and protected from dust.
“Several samples containing body fluid stains (urine) contained higher unexplained polonium 210 activities than the reference samples found in the attic,” says the case report. It was long noted that Arafat suffered from a bladder ailment that caused excessive urine to leak out and stain his clothing. In PLO inner-circles Arafat was often referred to as…’Old Man Pissy Pants’ and was often avoided as a person to sit and have lunch with.
“These findings support the possibility of Arafat’s poisoning with polonium 210, or on the outside, that the PLO leader might have accidently swallowed around 3,000 cheap Timex watches”
