Residents show their displeasure by throwing copies of Dorky Review into a large fire. Moments later they gathered up the authors and attempted to throw them in also.
The SW English town of Dorky held a rare celebration last night, an event that pulled in hundreds of angry towns people who gave up a night of television in order to vent their anger at a group of eleven outsiders who internationaly ridiculed their town and its residents on a sub-par spoof-themed website.
The celebration culminated a day of anger as town people burned almost 700 copies of a book called Dorky Review which severely criticized the residents of this sleepy town most noted for a species of chicken, the Dorking.
The eleven authors happened to be in town for a book signing event at the local bookstore and had on hand almost 1,000 pre-signed copies of the book at the beginning. Angry residents confiscated the remaining books and added them to the raging barnfire outside the Dorking Circle.
Constable Colin Cornbottom had to stop the crowd from dragging several of the authors to the fire, threatening to thrown them in along with their books. If successful, it would have been the first public burning since 1247 when several accused witches were burned at the stake.
Local pub owner Bill Peters calmed the lot by offering a free pint and some fish ‘n chips to anyone who wanted to wet their thirst and settle down before a crime was committed.
