Going Green? GM’s Chevy Volt New Sub-compact Runs On two ‘AA’ batteries

Chevy's Mini-Volt can reach speeds up to 45 MPH and doesn't use gasoline just two 'AA' batteries.

General Motors announced it’s extending the Chevrolet all electric car line by adding a sub-compact model to its Chevy Volt series of battery operated automobiles. In line with the current White House push for all green motor vehicles, GM is now offering a sub-compact car that runs on ordinary ‘AA’ batteries.

“We heard the consumer was hesitant about buying a car that is battery powered because of the potential for high cost battery replacements, so we devised a cheaper way to go.” Claims Harris Waggoner, administrative officer in charge of media relations for General Motors.

In fact, the $40,000 Chevy Volt would require a complete battery replacement if the battery was run down to the point where it overheated and internally shorted out. Estimated replacement costs is around $15,000. Many potential electric car buyers listed battery life as their number one concern in choosing an all electric car.

Waggoner introduced a prototype on the Mini-Volt showing a small compartment where a owner would insert two common ‘AA’ batteries in order to power the Mini-Volt. According to Waggoner, the car comes standard with a radio, power steering and brakes, A/C and heat. Options include wifi, GPS, CD player, spare battery holder, and 20 inch aluminum rims.

The sticker on the window gave an EPA rating of 2 miles per battery change, so the spare battery holder that can hold up to 400 ‘AA’ batteries is strongly suggested. Industry analysts estimate with ‘AA’ battery costs vs gasoline costs and averaging the cost per mile, the new Chevy Mini-Volt will cost about $3.25 per mile to operate vs a gasoline guzzler like a Hummer which would cost $.55 per mile.

Charlotte, North Carolina has pre-ordered 200 Mini-Volts to use as police patrol vehicles during the 2012 Democratic convention. Reportedly, Barack Obama will arrive at convention headquarters in a Secret Service version of the Mini-Volt driven by the first Secret Service dwarf brigade formed in late 2010. The battalion of little people was fomed after the Dwarf and Midget Association of America put pressure on the Administration for descriminatory hiring practices.
