The Hiroshima Charcoal Briquette Company of Davenport, IA filed Chapter 11 papers early today in order to seek protection from creditors. Analysts cited a massive failure of the company’s two year old advertising plan in which five million dollars were spent on branding and not a single bag of the charcoal briquettes were sold.

‘Our marketing executives claimed the target market of Japan was perhaps not the best choice after all,’ Says Benson Collie, CEO of the company.

‘Asia and Japan were chosen primarily because of high fossil fuel costs used to cook meals at home and the difficulty of storing flammable liquid products in combustible homes usually located in densely populated urban centers. We thought our charcoal products would be positioned to sell with such a friendly name which in Japanese means ‘lucky city.’

Collie also thought the company logo probably ‘sunk his product’ as well. On each bag was a large mushroom cloud and a fly-over photo of the Enola Gay B-29 bomber (with details that show the crew members waving) which was responsible for dropping the world’s first atomic device on August 6th, 1945.

Collie was also involved in another failed company when his development company lost $130 million dollars on a failed planned upscale community venture in rural Tennessee. The Mansions on Shits Creek failed to sell a single multi-million dollar home and was forced into bankruptcy in 2002. Collie did mention that his sales brochure die-cut into a shape of a canoe paddle was a big hit with out-of-state buyers, but failed to generate much real estate interest.

According to Collie’s wife Imogene, her husband has sworn off business enterprises and has ‘thrown himself into politics’ by volunteering to head up the national campaign of US Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-SC) who is actively seeking the 2020 Republican party’s nomination for President.
